10 Essential Kitchen Ingredients for Quick Healthy Meals

Spinach, lemons and pasta on a wooden chopping board

We all have those ingredients that end up in the trolley every week.

For me, these are the essential items I buy on repeat. They’re versatile, packed with flavour, and make it easier to get simple, real food on the table, even when life is busy.

While we all have those store-cupboard staples lurking in the cupboard, these are the ingredients that bring meals to life and feature regularly in my recipes.

Here are 10 ingredients I nearly always have in my kitchen—and what I make with them.

1. Spinach

Spinach is one of the easiest ways to add an extra portion of vegetables to a meal. A handful can be stirred into soups, curries, pasta dishes, and grain bowls, where it quickly wilts down and blends in with everything else. I usually keep a bag in the fridge because it’s such an easy way to add some greenery to whatever I’m making.

What I make with it:
  • Spinach, lemon and cream cheese pasta
  • Spinach and tomato pasta sauce
2. Greek Yoghurt

A tub of Greek yoghurt is one of the hardest-working ingredients in my fridge. I use it for breakfast, snacks, and savoury meals, and it’s a great way to add protein while making meals feel a little more satisfying.

What I make with it:
3. Frozen Peas

If there’s one ingredient I never want to run out of, it’s frozen peas. They’re affordable, nutritious, and can be added straight from the freezer to all sorts of dishes. I love how they instantly add colour, sweetness, and a bit of extra goodness to a meal. Plus, because they’re frozen, you can always have them stashed away for a rainy day.

What I make with it:
  • Pea and pesto pasta with parmesan
  • Pea, mint and cream cheese tart
4. Halloumi

Halloumi is one of my go-to ingredients when I need a meal that’s quick, satisfying, and packed with flavour. It cooks in minutes and works brilliantly in everything from tacos to salads and grain bowls. I almost always have a packet tucked away in the fridge.

What I make with it:
5. Beans

Beans are one of my favourite cupboard staples. They’re packed with protein and fibre, affordable, and can help turn a collection of random ingredients into a proper meal.

If you’re looking to take your bean game up a notch, I’d definitely recommend using jarred beans. They’re incredibly delicious and creamy, which can make even the simplest meal feel a bit special. Canned beans are fantastic too, though, and are usually the more budget-friendly option.

What I make with it:
  • Quick bean stew with tomatoes and spinach
  • Bean salad with lemon dressing
6. Lemons

A lemon can transform a meal in seconds. Whether I’m using the juice, the zest, or both, lemons add freshness and brightness that can lift even the simplest dishes. I always have a couple sitting in the fruit bowl.

What I make with it:
  • Bean salad with lemon dressing
  • Cous cous with lemon, garlic and spinach
7. Salmon

Salmon is one of my favourite proteins for a quick and nutritious meal. It’s packed with flavour, cooks relatively quickly, and pairs beautifully with so many of the other ingredients on this list, including lemon, cream cheese, and spinach.

What I make with it:
8. Cream Cheese

Cream cheese is one of those ingredients that’s far more versatile than it gets credit for. It can add richness to sauces, work beautifully in tarts and pastries, and help create a creamy texture without much effort.

What I make with it:
  • Pea, mint and cream cheese tart
  • Creamy pesto pasta sauce
9. Pesto

A jar of pesto is one of my favourite kitchen shortcuts. It adds instant flavour and can be stirred through pasta, spooned over roasted vegetables, or used as the base for a quick sauce. Whenever I’m lacking inspiration, pesto usually comes to the rescue.

What I make with it:
  • Pea and pesto risotto
  • Creamy pesto pasta sauce
10. Ready Rolled Puff Pastry

Ready rolled puff pastry is one of those ingredients that can make a meal feel far more impressive than the effort involved. I love having a pack in the fridge for those days when I need dinner sorted quickly but still want something that feels a little special.

What I make with it:
  • Pea, mint and cream cheese tart
  • Courgette and pesto tart
Final Thoughts

These ingredients might not always be the stars of the show, but they’re the ones I rely on most. Keeping a few versatile building blocks on hand makes it much easier to put together simple, real food, even when life gets busy.

Many of these ingredients appear in multiple recipes across Solo Mama Kitchen, which is exactly why I love them. They help reduce food waste, make meal planning easier, and ensure there’s always something tasty to cook, even when the cupboards are looking a little sparse.
